High Grade Coatings: Technology Update

The two driving forces of nanotechnology and smart coatings in the past two decade have fueled vigorous research and development work on polymeric coatings. The result of such movement has been the development of high performance and high valued coating materials. These coatings not only function as protective and decorative materials, they also push the performance envelop well beyond traditional definition of coatings. Included in this class of new developments are high temperature resistant polymeric coatings, stimuli responsive, super high solids liquid coatings, self-stratifying, superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic, and biologically active and corrosion sensing coatings. This paper provides a brief discussion of technology, properties and application of these high performance and high valued coatings.

Dr. Jamil Baghdachi is a Professor of Polymers and Coatings and the Director of Coatings Research Institute at the Eastern Michigan University. He joined the Coatings Research Institute in 1997, after spending 22 years at various technical and managerial capacities at BASF Corporation, DuPont, and ARCO Chemical Company. He is the author/editor of 4 books in related areas and has published over 122 papers including six book chapters and conference proceedings and holds 44 U.S. patents.

Progress in Radiation Curing Technology & China Market Overview

This paper will briefly introduce the basic concept on the energy curing technology and its latest progress of applications in various industrial sectors. The China markets based on the survey of around 130 leading suppliers of UV raw materials, formulations including coatings, inks and adhesives, and UV lamp and irradiation equipment since 2007 will be summarized in detail in comparison of the global geographic regional markets and industrial application segments. The predictions for the growth in applications in China will be also discussed.

Prof. Wenfang Shi received BS Diploma from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1970; awarded Ph. D. degree in 1994 on Polymer Chemistry by Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden. She received the full professor position in 1996 in USTC; served as the Vice President of RadTech China and Director of Academic Committee (1993-2006), President of RadTech China (2006-now), and President of RadTech Asia since March, 2012. Her research interests mainly focus on UV/EB curing technology, dendrimers/hyperbranched polymers, and organic/inorganic hybrids for UV coatings possessing. She is the author of around 180 publications and holds 15 patents in different subjects.

Novel Wetting & Dispersing Additives for High Solids Coatings

Solventborne high solids coatings are a challenge for formulators because of their high non volatile content, high viscosity and limited choice of suitable solvents. The viscosity reduction achieved by wetting and dispersing additives is thus very important in meeting VOC targets. New ways of formulating low solvent coatings and reducing costs are presented. Advice is given on choosing the right chemical structure for the formulation of 2-pack PU and 2-pack EP high solids coatings.

Ms. Susanne Struck studied Chemistry and Coatings Technology in Krefeld, Germany and finished her studies in 1990. She joined Tego Chemie Service (today Evonik Tego Chemie) and started working in the technical service department. Since then she has been working on coating and printing ink additives and cobinders. She was responsible for different product groups and applications. She is author of numerous publications. Currently she is Director Technical Service, heading the technical service team for Tego coating and ink additives.

Tailor-made Nano-Hybrid Particles for Functional Coatings

When it comes to achieving new functionalities in coatings, nanotechnology is expected to play a key role. Innovative material can be designed on a molecular level to obtain optimum performance. This paper will present novel inorganic-organic hybrid nanoparticles with excellent mechanical and optical properties. Application data and the mechanism involved will be detailed.

Dr. Michael Berkei studied chemistry at the University of Dortmund (Germany) and obtained his PhD in 2000 for studies in the field of non-metallic and fluorine chemistry. After completing his post-doctoral thesis in Duisburg (Germany) and Liverpool (UK), he joined the R&D department of Nanosolutions in Hamburg (Germany). In 2006 Dr. Berkei took up a position at BYK-Chemie in Wesel (Germany) as Lab Manager for Nanotechnology, where he was responsible for the development and technical application of new additives containing inorganic nanoparticles, with the focus on scratch resistance and UV protection. Since July 2009 he has been Head of Nanotechnology at BYK, coordinating ALTANA’s nanotechnology activities worldwide.

Synergy Effect of Fluorine Containing Polymers for High Performance
Coatings

The fluorine atom with its electronegativity and bond strength with carbon are used to create compounds with remarkable properties. Small molecules containing fluorine have some positive impacts as coating surface modifier. While traditionally used for high performance coating applications, fluorocarbon have found their way into solar, wind energy, cool roofing and even IPAD coating for easy cleaning. This paper will focus on synergy effect of fluorine containing polymers with PAI, PES, PEEK and silicon containing polymer in making functional high performance coating polymer alloy, organic-inorganic hybrid as well as microencapsulation to realise integrated synergy effect with outstanding coating properties.

Mr. Patrick Zhao has been working on fluoropolymer polymerization and specialty fluoropolymer coating innovative development field for over 20 years. Formerly he was DuPont Teflon Finishes Specialist and Deputy Member of China Fluoro-silicon Industrial Association. Currently he is the Deputy Member of China Fluoro Polymer Coating Academy, Author of book “PEEK” and Founder of Beijing Sino-Rich Material Science Co., Ltd.

Novel, Low Viscosity Dimer Diamine for Bridging Flexibility & Hardness
for Marine and Protective Coatings

With the increased focus on sustainability the demand for bio-based materials is strongly increasing. Over the previous years a range of bio-based building blocks based on dimer fatty acid technology has been developed for the use in high performance coatings such as polyurethane dispersions, flexibilised epoxy coatings and UV-curable coatings. These building blocks bring excellent hydrolytic stability, outdoor stability, flexibility and adhesion to a wide range of substrates including plastic, metal and wood.

Recently an additional range of low viscous, amine-functional products have been developed to expand the application possibilities for bio-based materials. For epoxy resins, the technology provides similar benefits to dimer fatty acid based polyamide curatives, such as flexibility and impact resistance. However, this new curative allows for high solids formulations with good water repellency, pigment wetting and excellent durability.

For polyurea, the technology brings improved moisture and chemical resistance together with an excellent surface finish and impact resistance. Furthermore, the novel amine functional materials are fully bio-based (100% renewable carbon) and are completely non-volatile, so bring clear environmental and health benefits to the end-users.

Mr. Hans Ridderikhoff obtained his Master Degree of Organic Chemistry in the University of Leiden, The Netherlands in 1998. He worked at Quaker Chemical, Witco/Crompton and Uniqema from 1990-2003. He joined Croda in 2004 and currently is the Research & Technology Manager for Coatings & Polymers, Industrial Chemicals and New Technologies. He has presented many papers at Lubricants Conferences and several technical papers in Polymers & Coatings at various Conferences globally.

Formulation & Properties Analysis of Transparent Thermal Insulation
Nano-scale Coatings for Building Glass

Using aqueous PU dispersions and nanosized antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) slurry as main raw materials, a thermal insulation coatings has been formulated. The dispersing technology of nano slurry in coatings and the principle of coatings formulation are discussed. Mechanical and optical properties study show that glass coated with this coating has a light transmittance conservation rate of more than 90% in visible region and a light insulation rate of more than 70% in near IR region. Window glasses coated with this product show excellent energy efficiency.

Dr. Glenn Hu obtained his Ph.D. degree from School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, South China University of Technology in July, 2004. he then continued his research career in the fields of coatings, inks, adhesives and theirs functional polymers there. He has published about 100 papers and possessed more than 10 patents.

Structured Nano-Acrylic Polymers: Towards Low VOC Paints with
Excellent Block Resistance, Hardness & Film Formation

The biggest challenge for the low VOC binders and paints is to simultaneously satisfy the demands of excellent film formation, film hardness and durability. SNAP technology represents an innovative solution to achieve low VOC and high performance standards. The resulting latexes feature outstanding film formation and exceptional film hardness as reflected in the paint properties such as block resistance and print resistance.

Dr. Wenjun Wu obtained her Master Degree from Beijing University and a Ph.D from University of Southern California in 1990 and 1995 respectively, both majored in Chemistry. She was the researcher in Henkel Corporation and joined The Dow Chemical Company in 1996. She took up the position at Arkema Coating Resins as principal scientist since 2009.

Multi-Functional Pigments for High Performance Industrial Coatings

Modern pigment technology is taking advantage of various synergies afforded by different components including organic chemistries to provide improved performance. These pigments are designed to provide multiple functionalities. This lecture will display formulation pathways that will offer outstanding performance properties of anticorrosive pigments in high-performance and modern primer technology. It will feature the performance properties in automotive high-solids refinish, coil coating applications, solvent-free UV curable and powder coating systems over various substrates.

Lars Kirmaier was born in Berlin in 1970. He studied Chemistry and completed his dissertation about highly-reactive silicon intermediates in 1998. He joined the R&D department of a leading German paint company and gained hands-on experience in solvent-free and high-solids polyurethane and epoxy resin applications. He started with Heubach GmbH in January 2004 as laboratory manager for anticorrosive pigments and joined the technical marketing team in January 2012.

Solvent Free UV Hardcoat for Spray Application

Radcure coatings are renowned for their hardcoat properties and thus used extensively for consumer electronic devices. Due to the high viscosity of the multi-functional urethane acrylates, the coating formulation usually requires a solvent dilution (up to 50%) for spray applications. Use of monomers instead of solvent dilution significantly lowers the hardcoat performance. A novel solvent free UV hardcoat has been developed. Using water as the diluents, the unusually high solid content product provides hardcoat properties that are similar to 100% UV resin. Performance results and properties of this technology will be detailed.

Dr Mouhcine Kanouni is currently Global Marketing Manager for Consumer Electronics & Industrial Plastics at Cytec Industries. He joined Cytec in 2008 as the Technical Service & Development Manager. For the past 12 years, prior to joining Cytec, he was attached to Ciba Specialty Chemicals where eventually he was the Global Technical Director for the lubricant additives business. He also served as an adjunct professor at several U.S. universities. Dr. Kanouni received his M.Sc. in Physical Chemistry, France. He earned his MS and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from City University of New York and his Business Management Degree at New York University.

Improved Effects in Pigment Dispersion by Coating Additives with
Advanced Polymer Architecture

In recent years, formulation additives based on new controlled free radical polymerisation (CFRP) techniques have made their way into industrial reality. Especially in pigment dispersants, well-designed acrylic block copolymers can offer improved solutions compared to conventional dispersants. It is well-known that the selection of monomer chemistry and the chain length of AB-block copolymers are key design parameters. But the extent of “structural perfection” in polymer architecture needed to realise optimum performance has not been clear so far. This paper will show recent developments using nitroxyl-mediated polymerisation resulting in high-performance dispersing agents for demanding applications, with a focus on the use in waterborne applications. Detailed analysis in determining the level of structural perfection necessary to achieve optimal results and what impact deviations from the ideal structure have on the performance will be discussed.

Ralf Knischka received his PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University in Freiburg in 2000. He joined Ciba Specialty Chemicals in 2001 working on the development of pigment dispersants via controlled free radical polymerzation. From 2004 onward he worked in product development for various field within coatings. Since 2009, Ralf is responsible in BASF SE for PD of Formulation Additives in Coatings.

Novel Application of Fluorosurfactants in Easy-Clean Architectural Paints

New research demonstrates that dosing the fluorosurfactants in both grind and letdown stages unlock their multi-functional benefits. This reformulation method, combined with several minor adjustments in the formulation, achieves the best overall easy-clean performance in low sheen paints. Three binders and two levels of PVC were evaluated with two short chain based fluorosurfactants to demonstrate easy-clean performance. Data for household and Leneta stain cleanability, as well as water and oil contact angles will be discussed in detail. No negative impact was observed on hiding power and wet scrub resistance. The use of fluorosurfactants thus is the most effective way to improve latex paint easy-clean performance.

Thickening of Waterborne Systems: Why Hydrophobically Modified
Polymers (HM-P)

HM-P gives very good application properties to the paint e.g. good hiding power, paint consistency and spatter resistance. The thickening mechanism of HM-P includes contribution from chain entanglements as well as hydrophobic interactions. Both the length of the hydrophobic tails and the mol.wt & structure of the polymer backbone influence the properties of HM-P. Hydrophobic latexes give strong interactions with the HM-P resulting in high thickening efficiency and may also render the paint an elastic consistency. All surface active ingredients in the paint play active roles. Paint thickened with HM-P is sensitive to the surfactants that are included in colorant formulations, which can result in a reduction in viscosity of tinted paint.

Dr. Leif Karlson took a Master Degree in organic chemistry at University of Gothenburg in 1985 and a PhD in physical chemistry at University of Lund in 2002 on a thesis titled “Hydrophobically Modified Polymers - Rheology and Molecular Associations”. Dr. Karlson has been employed at Akzo Nobel Functional Chemicals since 1985. He is now holding a position as Manager for a research group dealing with product and process chemistry.
