Formulating Low VOC Alkyd Based Coatings
Dr. Paul Cameron - Croda International, UK

Abstract:

Non-migratory surfactants, which allow water to be formulated into Architectural Paints by partial or total hydrocarbon replacement in solventborne and waterborne formulations, have been developed. The use of these surfactants as external emulsion stabilisers allows the preparation of low to zero-VOC alkyd based coatings with excellent shelf life and film quality.

This paper summarises experimental work directed towards partially and completely replacing solvents with water for VOC reduction in alkyd based coatings. For paint formulators, the water is added as liquid filler, resulting in solventborne coatings with reduced VOC levels. In addition, control over film thickness is regained and films dry significantly faster when compared to low VOC high solids alkyd based coatings.
