Architectural Coatings Combining Sustainability with Performance-Fact or Fiction?
Mr.David Sykes - Paint Research Association, UK

Abstract:

This paper will review current developments in the technology of Architectural Coatings, aimed at the goal of reducing environmental impact while maintaining acceptable performance and cost, and look towards the future to identify potential new areas of development. The industry needs to switch eventually to raw materials derived from bio-renewable sources, in order to truly meet the claim of Sustainability.

Different routes to this objective will be reviewed. To separate fact from fiction requires the use of an open, quantitative, science-based methodology. The status of the methodology of Life Cycle Analysis and Carbon Footprint calculation as applied to architectural coatings demonstrates the need for improved measurements of Sustainability.
